COURTSPORTS SCREEN AND RECOATING WOOD FLOORS

Most wood floors can be restored by a simple screening and recoat. This process is the most inexpensive way to bring back your floors original shine and most importantly build up a protective layer of finish. However, this process will not remove any dents, dings, or damage that has occurred to your wood floor. And it is not recommended if your existing finish has poor adhesion or is peeling in certain areas (a floor should be completely sanded in this case). Most gym floors can be screened and recoated over a two day period and will be available to play on after 72 hours of dry time.

Courtsports strongly recommend that all newly installed and resurfaced wood floors be screened and recoated after the first year. It is important to build up layers of finish to protect the wood and the game lines from being damaged. A typical gym floor with normal foot traffic will wear through one layer of finish each year. Basketball court keys, racquetball service areas, and aerobic room exercise areas tend to wear much more quickly. In these areas it is normal to wear through two or more layers of finish in a year..

Courtsports uses what is called a wet screening method when recoating floors (when applicable in most cases). Most competitive flooring companies use the dry screening method. Courtsports uses the wet screening method for two simple reasons: wet screening cleans the floor much better, and it does not allow the screening dust to go airborne.

When a floor is dry screened it abrades the exiting finish the same as wet screening. But what dry screening does not do is clean the floor. Wet screening used with a solution of Hillyard Super Shine All (or nuetral cleaner) will abrade the floor the same as dry screeing and additionally it will clean up the pop spills, sweat, dirt, etc. from your floor. It's important that the floor is cleaned thoroughly before coating to give the floor a better appearance. The new finish will bond to a floor that is cleaned thoroughly as well.

Some wood flooring contractors say water is bad on your wood floor...this is not the case. As long as the floor is not saturated and the water does not sit on the floor for an extended period of time the floor is perfectly safe and the water is harmless. The screening solution is sprayed onto the floor as it is being screened and then it is immediately picked up using an industrial vacuum. Your floor will look perfectly clean when completed, and typically much lighter in color because the dirt has been completely removed. The floor is now ready to be coated. Courtsports recommed allowing the floor to dry overnight if an oil-modifed coating system is to be applied.
